(The best viewing will be the night of June 22nd as the moon at its fullest will be in the day time on the 23rd.)

Happy Father’s Day!

Happy Father’s Day to all the father’s out there. The above photo is of my father and grandfather taken in April 1978 around the Tidal Basin in DC with the cherry blossoms in full bloom. My father lost his father while in high school so when he married my mom, he and my grandfather became close especially after my father retired. I did not realize how close.

When my grandfather passed, I remember asking my dad how mom was holding up. My dad turned almost tearing up. He said,” Everyone asks about your mother but no one asks me how I am doing.” It was then I realized that my grandfather had been a good friend and father to my Dad for over 40 years. I will never forget that.

If your dad is still around, whoever that may be, it is too late to send a card so give him a call, or visit and bring a present. A tie is nice or a hug is just fine. If he is not still with us, spend some with him in your thoughts.

Happy Father’s Day.

In honor of Flag Day, I took the day off work.

It is a beautiful morning. Last night the storm blew through with lots of wind and rain, but there was no Derechoes, no trees down, and now we have just one beautiful day…and I hear it is the last day of school for lots of kids too. Congratulations, kids, you made it!

Welcome to Summer!

“Oz The Great And Powerful”

Friday night, the last day of May 2013, with urging from friend Ted at the very last moment, we went to the Byrd to see “Oz the Great and Powerful.” Now of course any movie at the Byrd is better just by being there and only being $1.99 makes it even better.

The first 30 minutes or so of the film which were in black and white were fantastic and if we had left then, it would have been enough. It may have been filmed for 3D, hard to say. James Franco plays the wizard as conman and the three witches played by Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, and Michelle Williams were alternately creepy and good. The cast of supporting characters were great, especially the china doll girl. But I was hoping for a story more true to Baum’s original, and was disappointed in that it could have been much better.

There was lots to like, wonderful panoramic scenes of OZ and the Emerald City, but I kept thinking that I would like to go back and see the darker version of Oz from the 1985 film, “Return to Oz” which starred Fairuza Balk.

Although a Disney film, it is not for the very young, these flying monkeys are pretty scary, but the preteens and fans of fantasy will enjoy this journey into the fantasy world based on Frank L. Baum’s “Wizard of Oz” series.
