Go See “Winter’s Bone”

Jennifer Lawrence in "Winter's Bone"

We went to the Westhampton Theater Tuesday night to see “Winter’s Bone.”

It is based on the novel by Daniel Woodrell , directed by Debra Granik, and stars Jennifer Lawrence as Ree.

Intense. Relentless. I couldn’t find one line that rang false.

These people were very real.

Later I was surprised how many were actually professional actors, but of course not all…

Just go see it, we can talk later.

Winner Best Picture & Best Screenplay at the Sundance Film Festival and is
being held over another week.

One more thing…beware of the Ozarks.

Rattlemouth’s New Big Sound!

We saw Rattlemouth last night at Cafe Diem. Such a better music venue now that smoking has been banned. With the addition of Roger Carroll on tenor, Rattlemouth has a fuller bigger sound.

Rattlemouth @ Cafe Diem - July 28, 2010

Roger played tenor and alto while Danny played tenor and baritone.  George Lowe on guitar, Robbie Kinter drums, and Marc Langelier on the six string bass. Great music!

Look for a CD coming as Rattlemouth has been in the studio. They are playing again this Friday at Bogarts.

I like what I heard and I think you will too.

And of course you can hear Roger Carroll with Chez Roue’ at Bogarts at their regular Thursday night gig!

When I take my vacation this summer, I’m going to spend some time in Loversville.

“Micmacs” a film by Jean Pierre Jeunet

Posted in Film with tags , on July 23, 2010 by kozmicdogz

Last week we went to the Westhampton Theatre and watched the new film by Jean Pierre Jeunet, “Micmacs.” This is Jeunet’s take on arms dealers set in the future, or more probably a fantasy world not unlike our own. It is the story of Bazil, played by Dany Boon, who is looking for the men who caused his father’s death. It was fascinating, funny, and poignant. You should try and catch this in the theatres before it disappears. “Micmacs” reminded me more of “Delicatessen” and “The City of Lost Children,” then Jeunet’s other more well know films. “Micmacs” also stars Julie Ferrier and Dominique Pinon.

And then this past week we watched, “The City of Lost Children” a collaboration by Jeunet and comicbook artist Marc Caro. Visually stunning, it was filmed on a set built inside two huge airplane hangers. The film stars Ron Perlman, as One, a circus strongman who becomes the protector of the lost children who are led by Miette (Judith Vittet). A great Saturday night viewing at home experience.

Jeunet  other films include:  “Delicatessen,” 1991 (with Marc Caro); “the City of Lost Children,” 1995 (with Marc Caro);  Amelie, 2001; A Very Long Engagement, 2004; and now MicMacs, 2009 (French title: “Micmacs tire-larigot”).

It’s hot out, go out to a movie today!

And It Could Get Worse….

A cheery forecast from

It’s July. The Hurricane season is just getting going. It’s a hot year. According to NOAA it’s shaping up to be the hottest on record. Hurricanes like heat. All we need is a category 5 to come sweeping out of the Atlantic like a woman scorned and we’ll have a blender 100 miles across, 30,000 ft high, full of oil, methane, mud, dead pelicans, bits of oil rig and oil workers and clean up chemicals, hitting the coast at 200mph. And you thought Katrina was a bitch.

And if the methane bubble just explodes it really could be the end. It might be time to research all those post apocalyptic films to bone up on your survival skills.
