Train – 2015

Amtrak

Headed home from Penn Station in NYC to Richmond, VA along the way every once in a while another train would whoosh by so close you could have touched it if the window were open. We did not collide, we were not in danger, but quite an experience. Speed, color, and sound like nothing one usually hears on a typical day.

YokoOno

We missed Yoko Ono’s “One Woman Show” by one day. They were already taking it down. The show was on the 6th floor of the Museum of Modern Art and it was the first day of a Picasso sculpture show which we also did not see.

We were about to dock at Ellis Island. As I touched the large wooden doors of the main building I had a flash of my grandfather grabbing and holding open the same door as he walked into this same building over 100 years ago.

The registration hall on Ellis Island. At the far end of the room you can see three of the podiums the agents stood at and asked the new immigrants questions to see if they would be admitted to the United States.

FlatIronBuilding

Zipping by in a taxi we caught a glimpse of the Flatiron Building. It was the subject of a famous Edward Steichen photograph taken in 1904 which hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. We will have to visit the MET on our next trip.

New York Public Library – 2015

NYPLion

One of the lions guarding the New York Public Library on 5th Avenue. The famous reading room was closed and under renovation, but we did get to view a photography exhibit honoring the 175th anniversary of the invention of photography. The photography show was amazing with photos from Weston and Ansel Adams to Edward S. Curtis. The show was in a beautiful room with a crazy wood ceiling. Unfortunately none of the photos of the ceiling turned out so good.It was one of the highlights of our trip.

BodyDump

Walking to Liberty State Park in NJ we passed a perfect place for a body dump. Our guide,  said that the titles of The Sopranos did feature a quick view of a location near here.
