Have been waiting for September to arrive as it has been a long hot summer. Not the hottest, but a most uncomfortable summer this year.

Now September is here, the month of hurricanes. Isabel and Irene come to mind and the Tropical Storm Gaston. And there were others that have wrecked havoc on our city and our lives.

Now we have Hermine pictured above with the projected path as of Friday morning. Just a glance for us, but it could change. I hope it doesn’t.

Ready for the cool autumn breezes and cleansing rain of leaves.

Our trip to Winchester, VA and WV last weekend. Beautiful skies after a huge storm that ripped and twisted trees into houses and streets. Smashed cars and roofs. Now everything is green, the sky is blue, and the air refreshed.

Summer is the time for vacations. We have already taken ours. A week on an island on the outer banks of North Carolina. We have been before and we will go again. Now we must be satisfied with the memories which these photos help conjure.

Here are some photos from this year and previous years: 2013, 2012, and 2011.

The walk was a part of a class sponsored by the Blue Heron Outdoor School and this particular walk was lead by David Welker.

Some of the trees we identified were: Hack-berry, Ash, Black Locust (good for fence posts), Red Mulberry (good for hunting bows), Pawpaw, Silver Maple, American Elm, Box Elder (a maple), Chestnut, Red Maple, Basswood (or Linden Tree), Black Walnut, Winged Elm, Sycamore, Cottonwood, and lots of plants, Licorice, Dead Nettles, Euonymus, Virginia Blue Bells, Poison Ivy, and Grape vines.

Licorice. The roots smelled amazing!

We had sun, snow, and wind but the hardy group had a great time if we never really did walk much.
