From the VMFA:
In conjunction with the Xu Bing Tobacco Project Exhibition.
Media analyst and journalist Eric Burns will give a talk and Q&A about the topic of his book The Smoke of the Gods: A Social History of Tobacco. After Mr. Burns’ talk, there will be a book signing…the film Coffee and Cigarettes will be shown on the big screen afterwards.
ERIC BURNS: As an NBC News correspondent, Mr. Burns was named one of the best writers in the history of television news by the Washington Journalism Review, joining such luminaries as Edward R. Murrow and Charles Kuralt. For 10 years he hosted Fox News Watch, a media analysis show cited by Vanity Fair as one of only two programs on the network worth watching and was especially commended for fairness as a moderator. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Burns
COFFEE AND CIGARETTES: 2004; b&w; 95 min; Starring Bill Murray, Cate Blanchett, Steve Buscemi, Cinque Lee, Roberto Benigni, Tom Waits, and more. A comic series of short vignettes built on one another to create a cumulative effect, as the characters discuss things as diverse as caffeine popsicles, Paris in the ’20s, and the use of nicotine as an insecticide–all poetically linked by sipping coffee and smoking cigarettes. It delves into the normal pace of our world from an extraordinary angle showing just how absorbing the obsessions, joys and addictions of life can be, if truly observed.
Friday, September 30, 2011. 6-9:30pm at the Leslie Cheek Theater. $10.00 (VMFA members $8.00).
