First Steps On The Moon – July 20, 1969

ManOnMoon

46 years ago today Neil Armstrong took his first steps on the moon and for the first time a man from the planet earth had stepped on another world. When the event was televised I was at the Baltimore Civic Center waiting to hear the group, Blind Faith. The performance started late as drummer Ginger Baker was watching the moon landing and first steps on television before he went onstage. I had to wait until the next day to see the famous steps and hear Armstrong’s inspiring words on TV:

“That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

The next month in August 1969 a large music festival took place, Woodstock. Quite a year.

ManOnMoon

On July 20, 1969, 44 years ago today, man left the planet earth, flew over 238,000 miles in a spaceship, and landed on the moon. He got out of the space craft and walked around on the surface of the moon.  Amazing.

Here is a NASA photo of Astronaut Edwin (Buzz) Aldrin on the moon. In Aldrin’s faceplate you can see the reflection of fellow Astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man to step on the moon and the Lunar Module. Click on the image for a larger view.

Can’t wait until we go back.

I wonder what his dreams were like…
