This 1985 Japanese film by Juzo Itami has eluded me for years. When if first came out, it even played at a movie theatre I was working at, but for various reasons I was not able to see it. Years later when looking for it at video stores it was not available or out. The VHS copy we had at the library I work at has been damaged for years and again for unknown reasons it was never replaced. Fast forward to 2017, a newly restored version of the film has been released by Criterion & Janus Films and I have finally seen it.

It was worth the wait. Funny, refreshing, and beautiful. An unlikely group of characters help Tampopo to re-imagine her noodle restaurant from a lack luster establishment into the best in town. Lots of food and film references, this was a joy to watch and even after 30 years holds up to today’s palates.

Itami was an actor, writer, and director. My next search is for his 1984 film, The Funeral.

Itami died a mysterious death in 1997.

Another year old.
If one is lucky this will continue.
More aches,
more pains coming unannounced,
over hearing whispers about friends and friends’ parents.
We are not the same
and never will be again,
but that is ok
that is the way it just

The Sun Ra Arkestra – Richmond Folk Festival, 2015

My highlight of the Richmond Folk Festival was seeing the Sun Ra Arkestra. Amazing soul nourishing sounds and sights on a Sunday afternoon in Richmond, VA. I had see the Arkestra with Sun Ra, who died in 1993, at the Mosque back in the 70s. This was a life affirming performance and should keep me going for a while.

Sally Bell’s Kitchen

For many years I worked at the Biograph Theatre at 814 W. Grace Street in Richmond, VA and just down the street was Sally Bell’s Kitchen.

Here is a short film about Sally Bell’s Kitchen by Christophile Konsta. Sally Bell’s is one of Richmond’s many institutions and we love our history in RVA. Watch the film about Sally Bell’s and its’ famous lunch box.

Sally Bell’s Kitchen is located at 708 W. Grace Street near Grace and Laurel.

Now visit Christophile at her new venture, Perk! in Bon Air. A coffee shop near the Joe’s Inn in Bon Air where you can buy real Sally Bell’s chicken and potato salad in addition to enjoying a great cup of coffee.
