The family house still under construction in a new neighborhood built on farmland. When we moved in, the road was still dirt and the grass was still growing on the recently seeded yards. There were few trees except the few they built around. There was a huge tulip poplar in the back yard of the house next door.  It is still there.

We would gather to play under its branches with our friends.

Across the street was a field that still had cows grazing on it before more new houses were built.

Walking to school we would pass horses in a fenced in corral next to one of the two original farm houses.

There was no beltway. There was no McDonalds. There was no shopping mall. It was quiet and the sky was big and you could see the stars come out at night.

Just short of 60 years later the house has passed on to a new family and the remaining members of the old family remember the big hole in the ground, the dirt yard, and the creek at the end of the street.
