The Flag is coming down…

I am a flag guy. We had a flag pole in the front yard for as long as I can remember. My father was a WWII veteran spending almost 4 years in Australia and New Guinea. We flew the flag at holidays. We flew the flag for birthdays. we flew the flag for visitors. We flew the flag every chance we got.

We followed the rules. We didn’t let it touch the ground and my father taught us how to fold it properly into a triangle. I flew the flag for a full year after the attack on 9/11.

The United States flag is a strong symbol of this country. It has not always been a popular symbol for everyone and has represented some pretty awful things over the course of its history. But I see it as a symbol for all of the people of this country and I claim this flag as mine too.

This past election day I put the flag up at my house. My intention was just to fly it that one day, but because of the outcome of the election and I have flown it 24×7 since. I will be taking it down sometime tonight January 19th, the last day of President Obama’s second term.

It will remain in the closet for the next 4 years.

Although I may not be able to stand it and I may fly it once a year on June 14th, for Flag Day.
