D-Day ~ June 6, 1944

66 years ago today on June 6, 1944, the Allied forces crossed the English Channel and landed on the beaches of Normandy. What the Allies thought would be a tough couple of months turned into almost another year of intense fighting before the Germans surrendered on May 8, 1945, ending the war in Europe.

The Japanese surrendered on August 15,1945 ending the war in the Pacific.

During WWII my father spent almost 4 years in Australia and New Guinea. The above photo is one of my favorite photos of him. I marvel at what that generation endured through the years of war and wonder if we could do the same.

Here are some color photos of D-Day, before and after the invasion from Life Magazine.
